Takealot listing images: requirements, shot list and how to fix weak photos
Takealot's Listing Quality score expects at least three high-resolution images on a white background. Images do not affect search rank, which reads only the title, but they decide whether shoppers click and buy. Here is the shot list and the fix.
- listings
- listing quality
- seo
TL;DR. Takealot's Listing Quality score expects at least three high-resolution images on a white background: a front-facing main image and two detail shots. Five images is better. Images do not affect whether your listing appears in Takealot search, because the search index reads only the title. They decide what happens next: whether a shopper clicks your result instead of the one beside it, and whether they buy once they reach the page. Fix titles first, then images, starting with the top SKUs by revenue. If you only have a phone photo, Gadjet Image Studio turns one real photo of your product into white-background angle shots. It includes 10 images a month on Starter, 50 on Business and 200 on Empire, then R1.96 per extra image, incl. VAT. It will not invent a product you have not photographed.
What are Takealot's listing image requirements?
Takealot grades every listing from 0 to 3 on four inputs: title, images, attributes and description. For images, the bar is:
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| At least three images | A main image plus at least two detail angles. Fewer than three pulls the score down |
| White background | The product on plain white, with nothing else in the frame |
| High resolution | Sharp enough that a shopper can zoom in on the detail |
| Five or more for a top score | A listing with a strong title, five or more images, complete attributes and a full description scores 3 |
Takealot calculates the score automatically from what is present on the listing. You cannot grade it yourself, and you cannot improve the image part of it without adding images.
Do images affect Takealot search ranking?
No. Takealot's search index reads the title only. Image count, image file names and alt text do not change where your listing ranks for a search.
Images matter after the ranking:
- On the search results page, the main image decides whether a shopper clicks your listing or the next one.
- On the product page, the full set decides whether they add it to the cart or leave.
That is why the order matters. A listing with excellent images and a supplier's product name as its title never gets seen. A well-titled listing with one washed-out image gets seen and skipped. The listing optimisation sequence runs title first, then images, attributes and description.
What shots should a Takealot listing include?
| Shot | Purpose | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Main image | Front view on white, product filling most of the frame. It appears in search results and leads the product page | A lifestyle scene, a watermark or a promotional banner |
| 2. Detail | Texture, ports, labels, stitching or finish. Answers "is this well made?" | A second front view from slightly further away |
| 3. Scale or contents | What is in the box, or the product beside a hand or ruler | A graphic of marketing claims |
| 4. Alternate angle | Back, side or top view | Five near-identical front views |
| 5. In use | The product being used, as an extra after the white-background shots | Using this as the main image |
Lifestyle photos work as extras. As the main image, they make the listing look like an advertisement rather than a product.
What are the most common Takealot listing image mistakes?
- Supplier photos on coloured backgrounds. They miss the white-background standard, and competing sellers of the same product often use the same photo.
- Only one image. It caps the Listing Quality score and gives the shopper nothing to check.
- Text and badges on the main image. "Best seller" banners and feature callouts belong in the title and description.
- Low-resolution crops. A blurred zoom tells the shopper the product is cheap.
- Clutter in the frame. Other objects, shadows and props distract from the product.
Which listings should you fix first?
Start where traffic already exists. Better images on a listing nobody sees change nothing.
- Top SKUs by revenue. They already get impressions, so a better click-through rate converts directly into sales.
- SKUs you advertise. You are paying for each click. Weak images waste the spend.
- Listings under three images or without a white-background main image. These are the gaps the Listing Quality score flags.
Leave slow sellers until the top of the catalogue is complete.
How does Gadjet Image Studio work?
Image Studio creates listing images from a real photo of your product, inside the Gadjet chat.
- What you provide: the product's current main image on Takealot, or a photo you upload into the chat.
- Angle shots: new views of the same product on a clean white background — front, three-quarter, side, back or top-down.
- Lifestyle shots: the same product placed in an in-use scene, for use as extra images.
- What it will not do: create a product that does not exist, change the product into a colour or variant it is not, remove damage, or add features. There must always be a real source photo.
Gadjet can add the generated images to a new listing submission, or to Takealot's edit-request workbook to update existing listings.
The output can only be as good as the source. Photograph the product in daylight, fill the frame, and keep other objects out of the shot.
How many images are included?
| Plan | Images included per month |
|---|---|

| Business | 50 |
| Empire | 200 |
| Agency | Unlimited |
Extra images cost R1.96 each, incl. VAT, taken from your chat credits. Full plan details are on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
How many images does a Takealot listing need?
At least three: a front-facing main image on a white background and two detail angles. Listings with five or more images, a strong title, complete attributes and a full description score 3, the top Listing Quality score.
Do more images help me rank higher on Takealot?
No. Takealot's search index reads only the title, so images do not change where you rank. More and better images raise your Listing Quality score and your conversion rate, which means more of the shoppers who see your listing buy it.
Does Takealot require a white background?
A white background is part of Takealot's Listing Quality standard for images. Use it for the main image and the detail shots. Lifestyle images can be added as extras after those.
Can I use lifestyle images on Takealot?
Yes, as additional images after the white-background main image and detail shots. A lifestyle photo as the main image makes the listing look like an advertisement in search results and weakens the score.
Will Gadjet Image Studio create a product I do not have?
No. Image Studio only works from a real photo of your actual product. It will not invent a product, change it into a variant it is not, remove damage or add features. It creates new angles and scenes of the product in the photo.
How much does Gadjet Image Studio cost?
Image Studio is included in every plan: 10 images a month on Free and Starter, 50 on Business, 200 on Empire and unlimited on Agency. Each image beyond your allowance costs R1.96, incl. VAT, from your chat credits.
Should I fix titles or images first?
Titles first. A title that does not match what shoppers search means the listing is not seen, whatever its images. Once the title ranks, better images turn that visibility into clicks and sales.
What to do this week
- Pull your top 10 SKUs by revenue. Count the images on each listing.
- Mark every listing with fewer than three images. Also mark any with a main image that is not on white.
- Check the titles on the marked listings first. If a title does not match what shoppers search, rewrite it before you reshoot.
- Photograph or upload one clean source photo per SKU. Use Image Studio to create the missing angles.
- Add the images and view each page as a shopper. If you would scroll past it, the set is not finished.
Titles bring shoppers to the listing. Images decide whether they buy. Fix them in that order.
