Takealot vs Amazon SA seller tools: what carries over and what does not
Takealot and Amazon South Africa both hold your stock and ship your orders, but fees, storage, lost-stock claims, the buy box, search and payouts follow different rules. Here is what a seller tool must handle on each, and what carries over if you sell on both.

TL;DR. Takealot and Amazon South Africa look alike from a distance: you send stock to the marketplace, and it picks, packs and ships your orders. The rules underneath are different. Takealot charges a Success Fee by category and a per-unit fulfilment fee, stores stock free up to 35 days of cover, makes you invoice it for stock its DCs lose, decides the buybox mostly on price, ranks search on the title only, and pays every Thursday. Amazon uses its own fee names, its own storage rules, its own reimbursement process, a multi-factor Buy Box and a search index that reads more than the title. A seller tool built for one marketplace will miss the other's rules. What carries over is the discipline: a floor price, days of cover, a claims calendar and titles written for how shoppers search. Amazon South Africa is live in Gadjet: authorise Gadjet in Seller Central and the store syncs into the same workspace as your Takealot store. Takealot Courier and Gadjet shipping are live too. Makro and Shopify are not available.
How is selling on Takealot different from Amazon South Africa?
The table sets Takealot's published rules against the general shape of Amazon's. Amazon's rates for amazon.co.za are in Seller Central, and change. Check them there before you model a product.
| Area | Takealot | Amazon South Africa |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | Success Fee, roughly 8% to 15% by category, excluding VAT. See Takealot fees | Referral fee by category, per Amazon's schedule |
| Fulfilment | Per unit, by size and weight band. A five-unit order pays five fees | Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) fees per unit, by size and weight |
| Storage | Free at 35 days of cover or less. Monthly per-unit fee above that | FBA storage fees on the space your stock occupies |
| Lost or damaged warehouse stock | You invoice Takealot from the monthly Stock Recon Report. A R200 admin fee applies after 30 days, and the claim expires at 60. See stock recon | Handled through Amazon's FBA reimbursement process in Seller Central |
| Featured offer | Buybox decided mostly on price. A competitor R1 below you with stock takes it. See the buybox explained | Buy Box weighs price, delivery and seller performance |
| Search | Only the title is indexed. See listing optimisation | The title and other listing fields, including backend search terms |
| Payout | Every Thursday, after a 3-day settlement window. See the weekly payout | Amazon's disbursement schedule |
| Warehouses | Three DCs: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Stock in the wrong one costs an Auto IBT penalty | Amazon's own fulfilment network |
"Send stock in, they ship it" is the part that matches. The fees, deadlines and ranking rules around it do not.
What carries over between Takealot and Amazon?
The habits carry over. The settings do not.
- A floor price per SKU. Built from that marketplace's commission, fulfilment fee and your landed cost, before any repricer runs.
- Days of cover against lead time. Checked weekly, per warehouse.
- A claims calendar. Takealot's recon deadlines and Amazon's reimbursement windows both close whether or not you are watching.
- Titles written for how shoppers search on that site. Not the supplier's product name.
What should you not copy from Amazon to Takealot?
- Backend keywords. Takealot's search index reads the title only. Keywords placed in the description or attributes do not change rank.
- An Amazon restock plan as a Takealot inbound plan. Takealot's three DCs and Auto IBT penalties need a per-DC split. See Takealot inventory management.
- Amazon Buy Box assumptions. On Takealot, price and stock decide almost everything. Seller metrics that matter on Amazon barely move the Takealot buybox.
- The same title on both. Different search indexes and different shopper language usually need different titles.
Which seller tools work on each marketplace?
The Takealot seller-software market is small and local. TSeller, Palmetrics, StockBurst and Gadjet are the four tools most sellers shortlist, and the Takealot seller software comparison sets their prices and features side by side.
Amazon has a large global market of seller tools, most built around Amazon's larger marketplaces. They can be the right choice for Amazon research. They do not know Takealot's Success Fee categories, its 35-day storage rule or its recon deadlines, so they cannot run a Takealot store.
A third group, multi-channel operations tools, manage one warehouse across several sales channels. StockBurst, for example, lists Takealot, WooCommerce, Amazon and point of sale. These solve stock and order operations across channels, which is a different job from managing one marketplace's fees, buybox and claims. Some sellers need both.
What does Gadjet do on Takealot and Amazon South Africa?
Both marketplaces connect to the same Gadjet workspace, so one chat and one account manager cover both stores.
On Takealot, you connect with your Marketplace API key. Gadjet syncs sales, returns, listings, shipments and payouts, and runs:
- A floor-price buybox repricer with unlimited Watch
- Monthly stock recon claims built from the synced store
- Title rewrites, listing audits and Image Studio
- Market Explorer, which reads Takealot's public catalogue
- The Inspecta Gadjet Chrome extension on takealot.com product pages
On Amazon South Africa, you authorise Gadjet in Amazon Seller Central. Gadjet syncs sales, inventory, listings and payouts into the same chat, and builds FBA inbound shipment manifests. Amazon listing creation and bulk listing updates are in beta.
For shipping, two options are live:
- Takealot Courier. Add your Takealot Courier API key and book collections on your own Takealot Courier account.
- Gadjet shipping. Without a Takealot Courier key, quote and book on Gadjet's courier account: inbound from your warehouse to a Takealot DC, and returns from a DC back to your warehouse. The waybill and tracking come back in the chat.
Not available: Makro and Shopify are not connections you can set up. Market Explorer searches Takealot, not Amazon. The Chrome extension works on takealot.com, not amazon.co.za.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Amazon process on Takealot?
The weekly routine carries over: check stock, check the buybox, file claims, fix titles. The rules do not. Takealot has its own fee structure, a 35-day free storage line, its own recon deadlines and a title-only search index. A process copied without those changes misses deadlines and fees.
Is the Takealot buybox the same as the Amazon Buy Box?
No. Both decide whose offer gets the "Add to Cart" button, but Takealot's buybox is decided mostly on price, and a competitor at least R1 below you with stock takes it. Amazon's Buy Box weighs price together with delivery and seller performance.
Does Gadjet work with Amazon South Africa?
Yes. Amazon South Africa is live. Authorise Gadjet in Amazon Seller Central and your sales, inventory, listings and payouts sync into the same workspace as your Takealot store, with the same chat and account manager. Takealot Courier and Gadjet shipping are live as well.
Do I need separate tools for Takealot and Amazon?
Not necessarily. Gadjet connects both stores to one workspace. You still need each marketplace's own fee maths, because the fee schedules are different. An Amazon-only research tool can still earn its place on Amazon, but it will not file a Takealot recon claim.
Will my Takealot titles work on Amazon?
Usually not without a rewrite. Takealot indexes only the title, so a Takealot title front-loads the main search phrase. Amazon reads more fields and its shoppers search differently. Write each title from that marketplace's own search suggestions. See Takealot keyword research.
Does connecting Amazon change my Takealot deadlines?
No. Each marketplace keeps its own deadlines. Your Takealot Stock Recon claim still needs filing within 30 days to avoid the R200 admin fee, whatever happens on Amazon.
What to do this week
- List your six weekly jobs twice. Payout, buybox, recon, inventory, listings and ads: once for Takealot, once for Amazon if you sell there.
- Check each Takealot job uses Takealot numbers. Category Success Fee, the 35-day storage line and Thursday's settlement lag.
- Confirm your tools know those numbers. A tool that cannot show them is not managing your Takealot store.
- Connect Amazon South Africa if you sell there. Authorise Gadjet in Seller Central so both stores sit in one workspace.
- File this month's Takealot recon claim anyway. Connecting Amazon does not pause Takealot's deadlines.
Two marketplaces can share one workspace and one routine. They cannot share one fee schedule.
